"Jot" and "Tittle"

Print

Question:

When giving the Sermon on the Mount Jesus said, For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled (Mt. 5:18). What is a jot and a tittle?

Our Answer:

A jot is the smallest Hebrew letter (‘ = y)

A tittle is a small ornament placed over certain Hebrew letters, or a particle placed at the end of a letter.

The point Jesus was making was that contrary to what so many “professing Christians” believe today, God’s law was NOT being done away. On the contrary, it would be alive and well throughout the new covenant.
